History of the Belle Valley Volunteer Fire Department
The volunteers of Station 36 have protected this valley since 1938. Learn more about the deep roots the station and its volunteers have in our community and the many obstacles the department has overcome.
1930s
1938: The Belle Valley Hose Company is established by Frank Schrimper and nine others on November 2, 1938.
1940s
- 1940: First fire truck (1939 Chevrolet pumper) purchased in May. Belle Valley Hose Company responds to its first fire. Ladies Auxiliary is formed.
- 1941: First Street Fair fundraiser held, later renamed the Belle Valley Bazaar.
- 1944: First firehouse built at Norcross & Wattsburg Roads. Tanker 32 (1937 Chevrolet) purchased.
- 1948: Tanker 33 (1940 Chevrolet) purchased.
1950s
- 1952: First building expansion and community hall added. Name change to Belle Valley Fire Department is proposed.
- 1954: Single emergency telephone number established in Millcreek. Radios introduced for communication.
- 1955: Engine 33 (1954 Ford/John Bean Pumper) purchased.
- 1956: First rescue truck, Rescue 35, purchased and doubles as the first ambulance.
- 1957: Social hall built at the rear of the firehouse.
1960s
- 1962: Second ambulance (1952 Cadillac, Squad 37) purchased. Rad-O-Lites installed in ambulances.
- 1963: First chicken barbecue fundraiser held.
- 1967: New Squad 37 ambulance (International model) delivered.
- 1968: 30th anniversary brings extensive firehouse and hall renovations.
1970s
- 1971: New orange Engine 31 (Ford/FMC John Bean pumper) purchased.
- 1974: New ambulance (Dodge/National Coach) replaces rescue truck.
- 1975: New red Engine 32 (Ford/Young pumper) added.
- 1979: Ladder truck (1949 American LaFrance) purchased.
- 1980: New tanker (Ford/Saulsbury) delivered.
1980s
- 1981: Three-lane truck bay added. Original firehouse from 1944 incorporated into the new firehouse.
- 1982: New Squad 37 ambulance (Ford/TEC) delivered.
- 1985: Frank Schrimper, founder of Belle Valley, passes away. Official name change to Belle Valley Fire Department.
- 1987: New custom-built Sutphen pumper delivered as Engine 31.
1990s
- 1991: 911 service introduced to Millcreek Township.
- 1993: Enhanced 911 introduced to Erie County. Two McCoy-Miller ambulances purchased.
- 1996: Rescue 38 delivered. An electrical fire breaks out in social hall, extends through a portion of the firehouse and causes considerable damage. No apparatus are damaged.
- 1998: Belle Valley Fire Department launches its first website.
2000s
- 2001: 90-foot Sutphen Tower Ladder purchased.
- 2003: Truck 39 (Ford F350) placed in service.
- 2008: BVFD celebrates 70th anniversary. Engine 31 refurbished.
- 2009: BVFD renumbers apparatus. Major flooding hits Belle Valley, severely damaging the firehouse.
2010s
- 2010: New Sutphen Tower Ladder (Tower 369) delivered, then heavily damaged in a fire the next year. Chemicals involved in that fire cause damage to the ladder truck, gear, and equipment while also sending multiple volunteers to the hospital with respiratory concerns.
- 2011: New BVFD patch adopted.
- 2012: 12 BVFD members became certified rescue SCUBA divers and join the Millcreek Dive Team. That team is discontinued six years later.
- 2017: New Sutphen pumper (Engine 364) acquired.
2020s
- 2023: Belle Valley volunteers celebrate 85 years of service.
- 2024: New quick response vehicle added to equipment line-up to provide faster emergency medical services to residents.
